I always write my first drafts by hand. There is something about the process that forces my brain to slow down a bit before committing to the words. This is especially helpful to my creative process because in the time it takes for the message to travel from my brain to the page, my mental gears are turning and filling that downtime by devising options for the next step in the story.

I type those finished drafts and edit as I do so. This method has saved me much fretting over modifications and corrections because the "original" thought is still captured on the hand-written page, not obliterated by the DELETE key.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('72883','Beth Brown','I always write my first drafts by hand.
I think we've discussed Rushdie & Midnight's Children before - it's the only one of his I've read, and while I had the exact same problem with it as you - he seems so deeply in love with his own prose, which makes it hard to feel welcomed into the story rather than lectured down to - the ending is among the very best I've read, a perfect, devastating conclusion to an incredible story. For me, the book succeeds brilliantly in spite of a very irritating writing style.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any endings that really disappointed me. Others have, in their final few pages, spun my opinion right round and cast the entire book in a whole new light, like Kazuo Ishiguro's 'When We Were Orphans'. I was like, "oh, so THAT'S what he was doing! Excellent!"
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('70034','Barns','I think we\'ve discussed Rushdie & Midnight\'s Children<\/em> before - it\'s the only one of his I\'ve read, and while I had the exact same problem with it as you - he seems so deeply in love with his own prose, which makes it hard to feel welcomed into the story rather than lectured down to - the ending is among the very best I\'ve read, a perfect, devastating conclusion to an incredible story. Others have, in their final few pages, spun my opinion right round and cast the entire book in a whole new light, like Kazuo Ishiguro’s ‘When We Were Orphans’. I was like, “oh, so THAT’S what he was doing! Excellent!”

For me, the book succeeds brilliantly in spite of a very irritating writing style.\r\n\r\nOff the top of my head, I can\'t think of any endings that really disappointed me.
Was wondering what you're up to now, and found you're definitely still writing - that's a relief. I love the words Amitha quoted as well. My life bears no comparison to that of a dutiful mother, of course, but now that I write most days in one form or another, I struggle to recall how I ever lived without it. And somehow, the growth it's offered me is as real as that which I've derived from eating, drinking, sleeping, breathing.
Reply - <a href="#" class="quote" onclick="quote('69629','Barns','Was wondering what you\'re up to now, and found you\'re definitely still writing - that\'s a relief.
